At the Waterloo CBT Clinic we use Gottman Method Couples Therapy (GMCT) to help couples address a range of relationship concerns, including communication difficulties or difficulty navigating conflict, feeling disconnected, and addressing betrayals or infidelity. We also provide services for couples looking to proactively build skills or enhance their relationships.

Therapy begins with an assessment process during which your therapist will gather information about your relationship and begin developing a treatment plan. The assessment involves two 90 minutes sessions. During the first, both partners meet together with the therapist to discuss your concerns and relationship history. During the second, each partner meets individually with the therapist for 45 minutes to further discuss your concerns as well as your personal histories. Couples also have the option to complete a set of questionnaires at home between sessions. These questionnaires provide additional information about your relationship’s strengths and challenges. The purpose of the assessment process is to ensure that Gottman Method Couples Therapy is the right fit for your goals and to allow your therapist to develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your relationship’s needs. Your therapist then meets with you to share feedback and treatment recommendations.
