The Waterloo CBT Clinic is a private psychology clinic. Our clinicians provide psychological treatment for children, adolescents and adults, as well as couples therapy and parent coaching. Treatment areas include anxiety and anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, bipolar disorder, stress, insomnia, post-traumatic stress, and adjustment difficulties/life stressors.
We primarily provide pre-treatment assessments focused on determining whether our treatment approach is a good fit for your needs. You will meet with your therapist for an initial assessment of 90 minutes to discuss your concerns, personal history, and treatment goals. The aim of this session is to understand your needs and provide treatment recommendations. We may also have you fill out some questionnaires on-line.
Our clinic specializes in providing cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), a psychological treatment that has been scientifically proven to be effective for a wide range of mental health difficulties. CBT is a short-term (8-20 sessions), skills-based approach designed to teach you skills for better managing unhelpful thoughts and behaviours that are keeping you stuck. Our goal is to teach you a set of skills so that by the end of therapy, you will have the tools you need to be your own therapist.
Since it was initially developed, CBT has been the focus of much research and development. There have been a number of related therapies that have developed as a result of this research. Our therapists are skilled in providing CBT for a variety of concerns, and are also trained in related and complementary approaches. For instance, we may incorporate mindfulness (link to https://www.mindful.org/meditation/mindfulness-getting-started/) or self-compassion (link to https://self-compassion.org/) training into our work with clients.
The Waterloo CBT Clinic offers various courses and programs to target different audiences. We will be updating this page with new and upcoming offers. Participation and intake into any program will require an assessment to ensure the course content will be appropriate for you.
We offer a 6-session program that teaches how to implement CBT skills to manage chronic insomnia. CBT is a scientifically proven psychological treatment for sleep problems and is considered the first-line treatment for insomnia. Our program teaches strategies designed to improve sleep quality and reduce problems associated with chronic insomnia. Before enrolling in the program, an assessment is required to ensure that the content will be appropriate for you. The next insomnia program will start on October 15, 2024. More information about the insomnia program can be found by clicking here: CBT Insomnia Program October 2024
